Cut Align Product Focus

Hi friends! Today I'm joining forces again with the Splitcoast Stampers Product Focus team in reviewing the My Sweet Petunia Cut Align. There's a wealth of information from the team, so head on over to SCS to read the full product review. I received the Cut-Align in exchange for an honest review. After working with it for a couple of weeks, I am happy to say this little tool is going to be a constant companion on my desk. It makes cutting even borders a breeze!

If you aren't familiar with the Cut Align, it is a new ruler tool from My Sweet Petunia (the maker of the MISTI stamp positioner). It comes in a package of two rulers, an 8" ruler with a 6" slot and a 15" ruler with a 13" slot in the center just wide enough to guide your craft knife to a perfect cut. The rulers have a bevy of gridlines and markings making it easy to center your images and sentiments for trimming no matter how small they are. The Cut Align is intended for use with a craft knife (not included), but is also great for measuring and aligning elements on your cards.

I was skeptically optimistic (if that's even possible) about this tool when I started. I have never been able to cut a straight line with a traditiional ruler and a craft knife, so figured this would be a challenge for me. But I was so hopeful that it would be the end of me trying (and failing) to get a straight thin border on sentiments with my massive guillotine cutter! There was a bit of a learning curve on making sure I had the craft knife in the same start position for each pass through. You also REALLY want to make sure you place pressure on the ruler to hold the cardstock in place while you're cutting. As long as you keep those two things in mind, you'll be absolutely golden cutting even the teeniest of borders!

To begin my first card, I started with the Just for You sentiment from the Simply Said set. The sentiment has ascenders and descenders, which can be a bit tricky, but the gridlines on the ruler made it super easy to get a perfect cut.  I then used the excess strips of paper as banner tails placed slightly lower than the popped up sentiment for a little dimension. After this, I chose a piece of patterned paper and cut the border frame from the Mailbox die set directly from the paper. I then used the Cut-Align to trim an even border around the die cut frame. I placed a piece of cardstock that I colored with Copics behind this panel, then matted this panel with a very thin border of black cardstock. Easy peasy, thanks to the Cut Align.

Next I stamped the adorable bunny from Sponsored By and colored with Copics. I used the Cut-Align to center the image, making sure it could fit inside the panel I had already prepared. I added a few heart cutouts (also from the Mailbox die set) and colored them with Copics to match, then coated with glue gloss and sprinkled with twinkle dust glitter for a little sparkle.  I finished off with a polka dot embossed background and added a few teeny star accents from the Spring Confetti Mix to the banner.

For my next card, I wanted to use the Tiny Words stamp set that I bought forever ago and still hadn't used. I thought it would be perfect with a mixed media background so got down to business smooshing some Shimmerz paints onto watercolor paper.

When I had the background how I wanted it, I then watercolored a panel with each of the colors I had used and punched out circles from these colored panels to frame the butterfly Dotz I used. These Butterfly Beauties Dotz are exclusive to the April Missy Whidden Color Kit, available in the Shimmerz shop. The two sentiments are embossed in white onto black cardstock and then I worked a little magic with the Cut Align to trim them up perfectly. I then cut a super thin strip of cardstock using the Cut Align and then glued it down on a slight angle as a resting place for the butterfly Dotz. I then added the sentiment strips and finished with a thin black border on a white card base.
