Shabby Devonshire

Happy today! As I've mentioned before, I've really been into shabby chic lately. It's a bit strange, since I've always been a bit of a tomboy and avoided any kind of pastels, frills and lace like the plague when I was growing up. Black was my color of choice for everything. My mom wanted to decorate my room in pastel pink when I was in Jr. High, and it made me sick just thinking of it. Our compromise was a dusty mauve color with TONS of black accents. But as I slowly asserted my personal style over the years, it became black with a miserly few mauve accents. I thought I'd finally gotten away from pink when I moved to college, but in my junior year I was scheduled to have a single room and at the last minute got paired up with another gal, who got there before me and decorated floor to ceiling in pink. My heart sank as I walked into the room. And she nagged me so much about my teal and black decor that I finally swallowed my pride and went home to ask my mom for my old black & pink comforter and pillows. Wow! That was quite a walk-down-memory-lane tangent. Better get on with the card...

So, where was I going with that? Oh, this card is all about the shabby, complete with a sparkly pink cake. It uses this week's Viva la Verve! sketch and I chose the frilly second picture with the over-the-top teapot and teacup chandelier as my inspiration. Next I picked my papers - not a hard choice since I fell head over heels in love when my new Devonshire Collection paper pad by Kaisercraft arrived. This paper is so cool, I've got some more projects to share with it that are super bold. I just {heart} a collection that has the flexibility to create several different styles with it.

I started by cutting the blue paper, then embossing with an Organic Flourishes border folder and sanding. I did some faux stitching with a paper piercer and a brown Copic pen because when Laurie was here she changed the thread in my sewing matching to black and I'm too lazy to change it back! LOL. Then I cut the rest of my layers and distressed with Antique Linen ink and a sanding block. For the main image, I stamped the cake from Big Wish onto prism cream paper, then colored with Copics and then stamped the cake again to create a flower to cut out and pop up for some dimension. I added a little vintage lace trim between my two papers. I'm always loving Laurie's projects when she stamps on muslin, so I had her show me where it's located in the fabric store. I started with baby steps here, since I rarely stamp on anything but paper. The sentiment is stamped in Vintage Photo distress ink, then I just frayed around the edges and glued everything to a Kraft card base.

Okay, thanks for stopping by and reading my rambling thoughts. Have a fabulous day!

Lovely take on the inspiration challenge, Julee. I got a good giggle from your story - yup, tomboy I was too and NO pink in my house until my DD came along and LOVES everything pink LOL! Yes, her room is painted pink and she has a TON of pink clothes, but it is SO her :D At least I can contain it to one room in the house LOL!

Julee - I love your story and I loooove your card! That embossing folder is gorgeous.
I've been on a shabby chic kick myself lately. And I am too lazy to change the thread in my machine as well. I'm always afraid it will jam up, and I'm too impatient for that!

Julie - I just love this card and I think the lace and the scrap of muslin really makes it original. Can't believe the distress ink did not bleed on the fabric...
