Hold it Together

Hi friends!  It's Friday (hooray) and that means it's time for a new sketch over on the Viva la Verve blog.  This week's hostess is Stacey and she's got a super fun sketch for you.

For my card, I combined the VLV sketch with the HYCCT Holding it Together challenge.  I started by embossing the butterfly from Pink Power onto some pink striped paper in white and then fussy cutting.  I cut the Ribbon Die three times from the same striped paper and used the left over strip for the sentiment panel.  I thought stamping on the stripes would be a bit too busy, so I stamped the power of pink sentiment on vellum and layered it on top to soften things up.  These two panels are stitched to the grey designer paper to hold them together.

Next I cut a circle from a lighter pink striped paper and a mat from smoky slate.  I had intended to place the butterfly in the center with pink ink splatters and sequins behind, but then realized a) I didn't have a way to attach the sequins without using glue  and b) my ribbon banner was going to hang down too far and would cover up the butterfly.  So I decided to move the butterfly over the sentiment and use a brad to attach it, the pink striped paper, and the smoky slate mat to the grey designer paper.

Next came the banner.  I had looped some twine through the three ribbon die cuts and had intended to attach it with staples on either end.  But the banner just didn't lay right and the ribbon die cuts were sliding and not giving me the look I wanted.  So I pulled it off, leaving all sorts of staple holes.  BUT, I'd already attached everything else to the card, so I needed a way to cover up my staple holes.  I ultimately decided to cut a circle frame by layering two nestabilities together and running through the die cut machine.  I cut it off to the place I needed, slid the three die cuts onto it, then slowly stitched it onto the card.  It still didn't cover up all my staple marks, so I pulled out some of the twine and tied a bow onto each of the outer ribbons to finish off the banner.

Then at the very end, I decided the center circle was too plain, so trepidatiously stamped the stars around the outer edges of the circle.  All in all, a super fun challenge to think outside my usual little dimensional on dimensional box.

Thanks so much for stopping by today!  I hope you have a fabulous weekend!
