Mojo Bird Lessons

Happy Memorial Day to all my US friends.  If you haven't heard yet, there's a little Memorial Day Sale going on at Verve that ends tomorrow night.  All stamps and dies are on sale, so it's a great time to stock up!  I hope everyone had a splendid weekend.  I was laid up with back pain, but I got right on things this morning and now have a Mojo Monday card using Anniversary Birds and a sentiment from Wordy Birds to share.  It's round or square week and I think this sketch is a new personal favorite of mine.  It looks intricate but is really quite easy.

This little birdie from Anniversary Birds always makes me giggle a bit.  This set is one of Verve's all-time highest selling sets, but if it hadn't been for Mark, might never have seen stamp form.  As I've mentioned in posts before, I'm a bit of a perfectionist and also a very harsh critic of myself.  While I thought the birds were kind of cute, I also thought they were kind of homely and was afraid to put them out there and have people laugh at my poor drawing abilities.  But Mark pretty much MADE me release them and I'm so glad I did.  Every time I see one of these birds on a card it makes me smile.

It's a lesson I needed to learn.  A lesson to not censor yourself or your art.  If you have a trusted friend and you ask their opinion.. take it.  Sometimes they can see the potential in you that your light-blocking, perfectionism eyewear just can't see.  The definition of art is simply arranging items in a way that affects the senses, emotions or intellect.  So no matter what you make, if you put your heart into it, it's art.  And that's something to be proud of.  Something that makes the world a better, prettier place.  So create something that makes you smile today - then share it with the world.  It's bound to produce even more smiles!

Stamps: Anniversary Birds, Wordy Birds (Verve Stamps)
Paper: Lime Twist Life of the Party (My Mind's Eye), Poppy Parade, Basic Gray (SU!)
Ink: Poppy Parade, Basic Gray (SU!), Broken China (Ranger)
Accessories: classic and grand circle nestabilities (Spellbinders), divine twine, black taffeta (SU!), liquid pearls, stickles (Ranger), polka dots EF (Cuttlebug), flower, Modern Label Punch, Word Window Punch (SU!)

Ha..it's funny you think the birds are funny looking because I've always thought they were so fancy and sophisticated! :)

Love the color choices on this card and the Liquid Pearls. Bright, rich, and cheery card! Happy Memorial Day!

You are giving Sankiri some serious competition with all those liquid pearls ;) Loving the ribbon accent and sparkly wing on the bird. Big cheer to Mark for his "pushing you" to make this set :)

As for the sale...I heard...I spent...I can't wait to get my goodies LOL!

Have a great Memorial day and hope your back gets better soon!

I have been stamping for many years but it is only recently that I became enlightened to share my creations. I find your blog and your stamps have such a powerful message. The details are amazing and the sentiments are perfect for so many situations. With a dear friend battling a very rare cancer I have made it my mission to send her a card a week. I spent Friday night with her and she told me how much the cards meant to her and how appropriate and uplifting they were for the journey ahead of her. Thanks Julee for sharing your amazing design talents with all of us and making us realize creating is in the eyes of the creator!

Sometimes I get all wrapped up in pleasing others, I forget what I really like. This is a really colorful and pretty card and I glad it made you happy.

I am a serial blog hopper-I don't mind admitting it! On my iPhone I have a select few blogs open at all times-yours is one. It really surprises me every time you say that you worry about what people are going to think of your work because I rarely find a card of yours that I dislike or am not inspired and impressed by!!! As a fellow perfectionist and someone who is petrified of sharing my work with anyone just in case they don't like it, I feel your pain-however I have a hard time understanding why you would ever have to worry! You have such style and creativity, if I am half as good as you then that is plenty good enough for me :)

Keep up the good work and know that you inspire others :)

(love the card by the way! If I used red and green together I almost guarantee it would look christmassy! How do you do it?!)

Well said, Julee. I think you are absolutely right in your definition of art and that it's so important NOT to censor your art. Like you said, all of our senses are affected differently with different forms of art. Makes me think of the old saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." You almost trashed this cute bird?! I'm SO GLAD you didn't. He's unique and cute in a GOOD way...and just look. Now this is one of your best selling sets :] Awesome lesson learned, if you ask me.

Your card is amazing, of course. Love your layers and your palette. This came together beautifully. Hope your back is feeling MUCH better ♥

I needed that pep talk! Seriously! Thanks for being so vulnerable in admitting your doubts about that bird (who IS adorable, by the way). I love the ribbon tail you added and the twine, oh the twine!!!
I did two little wrappies on my card...that was all I could handle! Now I feel like a wimp! LOL. ;)

Amazing card! I love the way you define art. I have an ongoing debate with a friend's son about that. Our city has a huge art competition (Art Prize) and her son thinks it's not art. While some of it is questionable, I told him if it touches one person, it's art. You see, he is pursuing his Master's in Fine Art. He thinks anything by anyone not as educated in art as he is an insult to his profession. I like your idea of art better than his ;)

what a very cute card! I love the round sketch I can't wait to try this. Also, you are so true about your statement on your art - what an inspiration. Also, when you create something that makes you smile and feel good, it definitely needs to be shared with others!
